Introduction
PC BABY is a culmination two of my greatest loves: comput-
ers and my child.
PC BABY was designed to give the parent or half way computer
literate other member of the household an alternative to
having to get the baby book out of the closet, dusting it
off to trying to keep up with the amazing rate at which
children change before our very eyes. You can now just
power up your PC and keep up with your child every day if
necessary. It also gives you an excuse to play with your
computer if you're really into that like a lot of us are.
This is a demonstration version of PC Baby. It may be copied
and distributed freely as long as all of the files contained
remain together, intact and unchanged. If PC Baby is posted
on a Bulletin Board, all of the files contained here must be
compressed with any of the popular formats and then named
PCBABY.(extension). This product may not be distributed for
any amount of money unless written permission is obtained by
the author.
Note:
If you are computer literate, you will be able to get
through PC Baby without even reading any further. PC Baby
follows standard point and click routines as well as hot
keys. Just read the licensing agreement and the disclaimer
at the end of this document.
System Requirements
PC Baby should run on any IBM PC or compatible computer with
dos 2.x or greater and any 80xxx processor. You will need
approximately 230k of free memory to run this application
and if you have at least 256k you should never run out of
memory no matter how much data you input. A Microsoft
compatible mouse is optional.
PC Baby Setup
To set up PC Baby to run on your personal computer with a
hard disk simply make a directory using the dos make direc-
tory (md) command and copy all of the files contained on the
original PC Baby disk. All of these files will be necessary
to run PC Baby and store all of the "vital" information on
your darling child.
To run PC baby simply change to the directory which contains
these files using the dos change directory (cd) command,
type 'Baby' and press enter. You are now on your way to
discovering this amazing new application.
Floppy Disk Users: To run PC Baby from a floppy disk simply
copy the files listed above to the disk you want to run the
program on, log onto that drive and type 'Baby' at the
prompt and press enter. PC Baby will access your disk quite
frequently to store and retrieve data; so running the pro-
gram from a hard disk will significantly speed up the whole
PC Baby process.
Note: With this demo version of PC Baby you will be able to
sample all of the features in the registered version of PC
Baby. However, you will only be able to store certain data
for retrieval later. You will also not be able to print out
the reports that the registered version will allow. Take a
look. Take a test drive. If you like it send your order
today and it will be sent out immediately upon receipt.
Features
PC Baby is an easy to use menu/mouse driven application. It
has many different pull down menus, windows and dialog boxes
that will be very simple to use. The main menu at the top
of the screen includes the following items:
Child: Information pertaining to the Child and Family
Growth: Height and Weight information on your growing child
Health: Record all of your child's health issues
Firsts: Document your child's accomplishments
Birthday's: Record all the events of your child's birthdays
Holiday's: Enter in all the information on your child's
first holidays
Special Events: Record an array of special events in your
child's life
Reports: Generates reports on all of the data you will
input so you will have hard copies of all the
wonderful accomplishments of your child's life.
At the bottom of the screen you will find the following
features:
Journal: Enter in any events or accomplishments not covered
by any of the previous areas or just keep a daily
log of your child's life.
Family Tree: Generate a family tree from the data you input
about your child's ancestry.
Exit: This is how you exit the program. You can either use
the Alt-X hot keys or click on it with the mouse to
exit.
Close: Allows you to close any open windows by pressing F5.
Menu: Allows you to go to the main menu at the top of the
screen. Either press F10 or click on it with the
mouse.
All of the different menus and submenus have shortcut keys
that you can use. The best way around this program is
through the use of a mouse. Use either mouse button to
"click" on any of the menu items to pull down that menu and
then "click" the specific submenu area to go there. If,
however, you do not have a mouse or would just rather use
the keyboard, you can still easily get around PC Baby by
pressing F10 to get to the main top menu then either using
the arrow keys or <Tab> key to choose and option and press
enter. You can also just press the highlighted "short cut"
keys that are listed on the bottom of the screen for those
items. All of the submenus also have a highlighted short
cut keys that may be pressed to go to that portion of the
program.
CHILD
The first menu that appears across the top of the main
screen is 'Child'. To go to the sub menus you can either
click on the word 'child' with either mouse button or press
F10 to move control to the top menu and either press 'c' or
TAB until the word 'Child' is highlighted and press <enter>.
In the 'pull-down' menu for Child you will find the follow-
ing three submenus:
Birth
By selecting the submenu 'Birth' you will go to a dialog
box that will give you four choices: 'Name', 'Birth',
'Ok' and 'Cancel'. Ok means that you are happy with the
information entered and will save that information.
Cancel will cancel the dialog box without changing any
information. Even after changing information in the
first two choices you can either save this information by
selecting 'Ok' or cancel all of the work by selecting
'Cancel'. You must choose 'Ok' at the main dialog box
before exiting or you will not save the new information
that you entered. All previously saved information will
be unchanged however. The following explains the other
two choices.
Name
By selecting the 'Name' button (either clicking with a
mouse button, pressing the short cut key "N" or tabbing
to it and pressing <enter> you will go to another
dialog box that will give you an opportunity to either
enter or change your child's name (first, middle and
last). To enter data either click on the blue input
lines with the left mouse button or tab to them. Once
you are in this box you can choose any of the input
lines by either clicking on it with the mouse or tab-
bing to it. If you are using a mouse and wish to
change the entire line, just click down on one side of
the line, hold the button down and drag across to the
other side of the line. Then when you start typing,
you will change the entire line. If not using a mouse
you can change the entire line by simply using the tab
button to tab to the input line you want to change.
Once you begin typing you will erase the old data.
Once you have entered the data select the 'Ok' button
at the bottom of the box and the data will be changed;
however, you must also select the 'Ok' button at the
main 'Child' dialog box to permanently save the infor-
mation.
Birth
By selecting the 'Birth' button you will go to another
dialog box that will allow you to enter your child's
birthdate, time of birth, birthweight, height, eye
color and hair color. To enter the day and month of
your child's birth simply click in the parenthesis next
to the appropriate day/month or tab to either the day
or the month box and use the arrow keys to select the
appropriate day/month and press enter. This also works
for am/pm next to the time of birth. The rest of the
data is gathered via input lines as explained above.
Again once the data has been entered select 'Ok' both
in this box and the main 'Child' box.
Once you have entered the above data and saved it as
explained above this data will appear when you return to
these areas
Family
When you select the 'Family' submenu you will go to a
box with several choices of buttons. When you select any
of these buttons you will get a box similar to the Child
Name box that will allow you to enter the name of the
person whose button you selected. Later sections of this
manual will explain how to display this information as a
family tree.
Environment
When you select the 'Environment' submenu you will go to
a dialog box that will allow you to enter some informa-
tion about the environment that your child was first born
into, including the hospital, attending physician, and
first address. The data is gathered through the use of
input lines as described earlier in this document.
HEALTH
The 'Health' menu will allow you to input and track many
different areas concerning your child's health. You select
this menu and its submenus just as explained above in
'CHILD'. The following submenus are available under
'Health':
Doctor Visits
When you choose 'Doctor Visits' you will go to a dialog
box that will give you choices on entering or scanning a
record of all of your child's visits to the doctor. The
following will explain each button.
Pediatrician
This option will allow you to enter all of the perti-
nent information about your pediatrician.
New Entry
This option allows you to enter a new entry. It will
ask you for a date and then give you 6 lines to enter
remarks about the visit. You can also choose this
option if you want to change an existing entry.
Scan
This option will allow you to review all of the entries
you have made about your child's trips to the pediatri-
cian. This information will be displayed in a window
that contains a vertical scroll bar on the right side
of the window. To scroll through the information you
must first select the window by either clicking on it
with the mouse or hitting the tab button.
To scroll through the information one line at a time
you can either click on the up or down arrows on the
scroll bar with the mouse or use the up and down arrows
on your keyboard. To scroll through the information a
page at a time you can click on the scroll bar with the
mouse button one time for each page. Click below the
square, on the scroll bar, that represents how far
through the document you are, to go down and above it
to go up. You can also click on the square and drag it
up or down to go to a specific location in the list.
You can use the page up and page down keys on your
keyboard to go through this information quicker if you
are not using a mouse.
Delete
This option will allow you to delete an entry that you
no longer want or one that is in error.
Immunizations
When you choose this menu item you will be able to enter
the date when your child was immunized for the different
choices. Just choose a button and you will be asked for
a date. Remember to choose the Ok button before exiting
the main dialog box to ensure that all of the newly
entered data is saved. You also have the following
options:
Scan
This option will allow you to scan the immunizations
your child has received. This information is displayed
in a window with a scroll bar and can be manipulated
just as described earlier in this document under Doctor
Visits.
Delete
This option will allow you to delete an erroneous
entry.
Childhood Diseases
This menu item will allow you to enter the various child-
hood diseases or any time your child is sick. The op-
tions you will be given here are 'new', 'scan' and
'delete'. These work the same as explained above. When
entering a new entry you will be able to enter a date,
the illness and remarks about the illness. Remember to
choose the Ok button at the main dialog box to save the
new data that is entered.
Teeth
By selecting this option you will go to a window with 20
numbered buttons that represent the first 20 teeth your
child will get. Just choose a button and enter the date.
If you need to change a date just choose the tooth again
and reenter. There are guides on each of the corners
that tell you which tooth each button represents. Remem-
ber to choose the Ok button to save the new data that is
entered.
GROWTH
This option will allow you to enter a record of your child's
height and weight on a given date. You can also review your
entries. This option gives you a window with all of the
previous entries that can be scrolled up and down with the
scroll bar on the side of the window. To leave this window
just click on the close icon at the top left corner of the
window or press F5 if you are not using a mouse. You can
exit the program or go onto different options without clos-
ing this window.
FIRSTS
When you select this item you have two choices: 'Skills'
and 'Words'. These options are described below:
Skills
When you select this option you will go to a dialog box
with several buttons that have the name of a common skill
or event in the beginning of your child's life. When you
select a button you will go to another box that will ask
you for the date that the particular skill was mastered
or the specific event occurred. At the bottom of this
first box full of buttons there is a button labeled
'more'. This button will take you to another box full of
skills and events. This new box contains a button la-
beled 'still more' which will take you to the third and
last box full of buttons. This last page also gives you
ten buttons for skills and events not covered in the
other multitude of buttons. Once again remember to
select the Ok button in the first page before exiting the
skills option so that you can save all of the newly
entered data.
BIRTHDAYS
This option will allow you to record guests, gifts, and
remarks about your child's first seven birthdays. The
interface here is easy to understand if you've made it
through the other menus you can easily make it through this
one. You will be given a box with five buttons. The top
three of which are 'guests', 'presents' and 'remarks'. When
you choose either guests or presents you will go to another
box that will give you the option to add a new name or
present, to scan the previous entries, or to delete an
entry. These options were previously discussed in this
document and should be familiar to you. The remarks button
will allow you to enter several lines of remarks on the days
events and happenings that can not be covered by the guests
and presents sections. The other two buttons are Ok and
Cancel. These have been discussed earlier. Just make sure
to select Ok to save all of the data that has been input.
That should be the last time you should have to read that
warning.
HOLIDAYS
This option will allow you to record two pages of remarks
about your child's first holidays. One of the options on
the first page is 'page 2'. This will take you to the
second page of the remarks. Select Ok on the second page to
go back to page one. And remember ... Oh I think you know
what we were going to say!!
SPECIAL EVENTS
This option will allow you to record two pages of remarks
about ten other special events that were not already covered
in the rest of the program. It also allows you to enter two
pages of remarks about ten special visits. The interface
here is the same as that in the birthday section.
REPORTS
Under this title you will be given the option to print out
reports on all of the information that you entered. This
option is only available with the registered version. So
order today.
JOURNAL
This option is selected by either clicking on the word
journal on the status line on the bottom of the screen or by
pressing <Alt-J>. With this option you can record an entry
about anything for every day of your child's life. You will
get the option of adding a new journal entry, deleting a
journal entry or scanning all the journal entries. This
works just as all of the other areas that have these op-
tions. You may only enter one journal entry for each date.
However, this section does not check for a valid date, so if
you have the desire to enter more information you can enter
any date from 00/00/0000 to 99/99/9999.
FAMILY TREE
This option will display a sample family tree. The regis-
tered version will display a family tree based on the infor-
mation you input in the CHILD section (i.e. you baby's name
and the names of all of the family members entered). The
registered version also gives you the option of printing
this information.
Note:
To exit PC Baby you must first close out all of the gray
dialog boxes that are opened by either 'Cancel'ing then
'OK'ing them or clicking on the close icon on the upper left
corner
